How are victims and defendants different?

Victim is the person who claims they've been at the receiving end of a crime.
Defendant is the person they claim has done the crime.
In a fraud, the person who lost money is the victim, and the one who gained money is the defendant. The term 'defendant' only applies once you get into court.
