Answer:

At the beginning of civilization people lived in small groups and depended on agriculture. Most villages were located near rivers and the civilization was called River Valley Civilization.

In other areas particularly in forest area tribals lived in small villages and depended on forest products. They had little contact with others. “The soul of India lives in its villages", declared M. K. Gandhi at the beginning of 20th century.

According to the 2011 census of India, 68.84% of Indians (around 833.1 millionpeople) live in 640,867 different villages. The size of these villages varies considerably. 236,004 Indian villages have a population of fewer than 500, while 3,976 villages have a population of 10,000+. Most of the villages have their own temple, mosque, or church, depending on the local religious following.

Before Industrial Revolution in England people were living in villages and hamlets with varying population. If a hamlet was having a church it was considered a village.

After industrial revolution people migrated to towns and cities in search of employment and urban areas came into existence. It is also happening nowadays in other parts of the globe and India.

In India village is the smallest adminstrative unit. A village Panchayat administers local issues except law and order. Usually a school, a medical unit is available to a group of villages. Connectivity by road, supply of drinking water and electricity are major issues in modern Indiàn villages.
