The long wing feathers typical of most birds would be too flexible for swimming through water. Instead of having wings like other birds, penguins have tapered, flattened flippers for swimming. Penguins propel themselves through the water by flapping their flippers. The wings lack flight feathers and cannot be folded; in use they form flat, scimitar-shaped . The bones of these and other flight birds are hollow, which makes flying easier On a warm day, penguins ruffle their feathers to break the insulating air layer, hence cooling down. While swimming in the sea, the water pressure bends the penguin feathers against the body, thinning the air layer thus reducing the insulating effect. However, a penguin will still keep warm thanks to the blubber layer.
