SMS (short messages service), which is what text messages were initially, were short messages that were tacked onto the regular communications that a cell phone was having with the tower at all times. The huge prices carriers charged for them was them charging for something that happened anyway. The message is tacked into the cell phones communication with the powers and then quickly routed to another cell phone which is also already communicating with the towers. It was a rather genius market strategy.

Internet service messages like iMessage, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc, all use the internet to send messages. It basically works very similar to email. The message is sent via the internet to a server and then the server routes it to the correct account. Devices that are signed into the accounts can send and receive messages.

HOPE IT HELPS...!!!
