The Indian Armed Forces were quick to respond to the disaster caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean and the following Tsunami, that affected countries such as Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia, other than India, in December 2004.
Naval helicopters from land bases as well as from Indian Navy ships, which reached the area struck by the disaster, flew in relief materials as well as medical and armed forces personnel to coordinate and take part in rescue and relief operations. Food, shelter, emergency medical aid etc. were provided to people in the affected areas.
