Alkyl halides react with sodium in dry ether to give hydrocarbons containing double the number of carbon atoms present in the halide. This reaction is known as Wurtz reaction. A mixture of an alkyl halide and aryl halide gives an alkylarene when treated with sodium in dry ether and is called Wurtz-Fittig reaction.

Explanation:

Wurtz reaction is for aliphatic compounds and Fittig reaction is for aromatic compounds. These reactions are used to prepare Alkanes from Alkyl Halides. In all the three reactions dry Ether is used as catalyst because Sodium reacts vigorously with moisture.

) The Wurtz reaction is not suitable for tertiary alkyl halides due to side reaction involving elimintaion reactionsAs steric-hindrance i.e. the factor which arises due to the bulkiness of to reacting alkyl, or rather, tertiary alkyl groups.
