Answers
This has become an old Phenomena.
With the advancement in technologies and GPS(global positioning system), this kind of robbery is almost extinct.
The people who attack and rob ships are called Pirates.
There are different ways to attack and rob ships at sea.
The most common way is to get close to the ship you want to rob. Get close to the ship using smaller boats. Use grappling hooks and ropes to get on board of the ship. You can disable the ship's rudder. Disabling the rudder will prevent the escaping option for that ship. If the people on the ship doesn't surrender peacefully, then you will have to fight with them. You can signal your ship to come closer and use cannons to damage the enemy ship.
After capturing the ship, tie all the people on the ship. Lock them in some room with active guards on them. Ask 1 or 2 of the prisoners to show you the money, treasure or other precious things on the ship.
After robbing the ship, leave it and go to your ship. If you want to be cruel pirates, take the prisoners with you as slaves and destroy the ship.
Victory of pirates in boarding a ship successfully depends on their bold tactics and actions, but sometimes by their luck. They may take any decisive techniques to gain victory. Their plan may be completely insane, but that doesn’t matters.
Some of the formal techniques of pirates are given below.
They raise a false flag while approaching a merchant ship to show the captain on the merchant ship that they have no intention of looting the ship.
Once the captain of that merchant ship get convinced, pirates will begin to approach the merchant ship to a closer distance. Once they get closer enough to the merchant ship, they will hook that ship with theirs. With in an instance they will bring down the false flag and host their terrifying cross bones flag in order to bring fear to the crew of the merchant ship. Once they board on to the merchant ship they will cut of the rudder to take the crew of that ship off from the safety thoughts.
Then they will command the crew to surrender with a warning shot. If the crew refuses to do so. Then they will fight. They will show no mercy. Because their only aim is to kill or take captives.
This is how pirates take the control of a merchant ship in the golden ages of pirates.
