The energy produced in anaerobic respiration is often sufficient forbacteria. But it's not enough all the time. For aerobic respiration prokaryotes contain mesosomes in their plasma membrane. In eukaryotes, energy is produced in the membranes of mitochondria.

In order to survive, prokaryotes such asbacteria need to produce energy from food such as glucose. In eukaryoticcells, respiration is performed bymitochondria, but prokaryotic cells do not have membrane-enclosed organelles.
