the atom’s radius is about 10^5 times that of the nucleus, so the volume of the atom isabout 10^15 times the volume of the nucleus. If you imagine the nucleus to be a sphere of radius 1 mm, then theatom would be a 100 m radius sphere: a ball larger than a cricket stadium and as high as the Gateway arch in St Louis. (For Indian readers, the Qutub is 73m tall, so the atom would be 3 times taller.)

Rutherford observed that when alpha particles were bombarded on a very thin foil a very small portion of it bounced back, the portion being the nucleus which rebounded only 1 in 12000 rays. Concluding nucleus is very very very small compared to the atom.
