India is a society still very much feudal in nature. With people divided into haves and have nots, opportunities are not equally distributed. It includes opportunities to read.
The poor don't have access to books, proper education. They simply do not have a choice when it comes to reading.
The lower middle class is running after getting a job, finding a partner, settling down, starting a family, etc. They can access the books but limit their saves to books that directly benefit them in shorter period of time(tutorials, guides, course textbooks).
The rich(elite and upper middle class) have the full spectrum of opportunities ranging from good education, good network, libraries, friends, ample time, etc.
But not all people like to read as they have to enjoy movies, clubs, etc.
