The history of the British Raj refers to the period of British rule on the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947. The system of governance was instituted in 1858 when the rule of the East India Company was transferred to the Crown in the person of Queen Victoria (who in 1876 was proclaimed Empress of India).

1. The British came to india for trading purpose.

2.Britain had been trading in India since about 1600, but it did not begin to seize large sections of land until 1757, after the Battle of Plassey.

3. It was a battle between Robert Claive and Sirajudaulah( nawab of Bengal)

4. This battle pitted 3,000 soldiers of the British East India Company against the 5,000-strong army of the young Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud Daulah, and his French East India Company allies.

5. The main commander of Sirajudaulah, Mir Jafir diidn't support him, however supported the british leading to the victory of the British.

6. Mir Jafir is considered as the traitor in the Indian history.

7. Since there was no unity in India and various kingdoms used to fight against each other, the British took the oppotunity and decided to rule India.
