1) By indicating their physical states on both the sides. (l) for liquids, (aq) for aqueous, (g) for gaseous and (s) for solids.
Ex:- Fe₂O₃(s)+ 2Al(s)------> 2Fe(s)+ Al₂O₃(s)
2) By showing whether heat is absorbed or released.
Ex:- i) C+ O₂------> CO₂+ Heat (Exothermic)
ii) N₂+ O₂+ Heat ------> 2NO (Endothermic)
3) By showing whether the gas is evolved or not. It is denoted by upward arrow.
Ex:- Zn+ H₂SO₄-----> ZnSO₄+ H₂↑
