In short we can say ,

A function is a set of ordered pairs,no two of which have the same set of first component.

For example :

{(a,b),(c,b)} is a function,

but {(a,b),(a,c)} is not a function.

Here a and c is the domain and b is the co-domain.

A function f : A→B can only defined if :

i)the domain A is entirely used up.

ii)the co-domain B may or may not be completely used up.

iii)more than one element of domain A may associate with the same element of the co-domain B.

iv)one element of domain A can not associate with more than one element of co-domain B.
