Explanation:

Take a thin piece/sheet of colourless glass and coat one side of it with a reflective material (generally silver or aluminum). Of course lots of other intermediate processes are carried on as well (source Wikipedia) since silver would not bond with glass directly. Earlier mercury used to be used too. No when light falls on the side of the glass not coated, the light rays pass through the glass, reflect on the reflective coating, change direction, again pass through the glass and come out on the same side from which the rays first fell on the glass. The glass is just the substrate to hold the reflective coating. Instead of glass the substrate can be a sheet of clear plastic or something like that as well. In ancient times metal plates made of brass or silver or gold used to be polished to such an extent as to work as mirror. Of course it was not as good as modern mirror.
