Adults’ Role in Helping Teenagers Cope With Change
Louise J. Kaplan has rightly and very wisely remarked, “Adolescence represents an inner emotional upheaval, a struggle between the eternal human wish to cling to the past and the equally powerful wish to get on with the future.” They are just people trying to learn how to adjust to umpteen changes taking place in their life; they are quite perplexed, confused, and facing lots of dilemmas.
It is quite true that adolescence is the pivotal phase in any human’s development and growth. It is crucial transitional period from childhood into adulthood. Crucial physical, emotional, mental, and attitudinal changes take place in this period. This is the age of stress and aggression. This phase is the phase of emotional turmoil in which an adolescent feels quite confused and vague about many issues of life. One of the most conspicuous aspects of teenage is the clash of ideology between the teenagers and grown-ups.
It has been found that most cases of teenage problems result from isolation, loneliness, desperation, and lack of trust in parents, friends, and other family members. All these problems can be minimized by understanding teenage problems and tackling them considerately. Teenagers are exempted to react, but the elders must not react to their reactions as it might entice them to go astray and take wrong decisions in stress and hysteria.
The parents, teachers, and other agencies that have the responsibilities to look after their healthy growth and development must ensure they get healthy environment, training, and skills to be able to cope successfully with the many complexities and stresses of this phase.
The adults can help the teenagers in the following ways:
1. Adults can be a perfect role models in showing them how to tackle changes in life. They must not set a bad example in front of the teenagers by cribbing and complaining about the changes. If they are good at adapting to changes themselves, the teenagers who more often than not always watch them, will definitely learn to adapt to changes.
2. Adults should teach the teenagers spiritual outlook to life, which equips one with equanimity and poise for all types of situations.
3. Adults should teach the teenagers the power of positive thoughts, deep mediation, deep breathing, prayer, and faith in God that are so helpful in tackling change and creating life according to expectation.
With these values imbibed in the character, teenagers can really be helped in dealing with changes and stress.
The only thing that never changes is “changes”.
It is a fact of life. It may be bad or good but it is an essential thing to keep the life move on in some way. Hardly, getting adapted to the changes is one of the worst nightmares of everyone. It will be hard, even for a well grown adult. For teenagers; it is even harder.
Every parent wants their child to rise up as a happy adult in the society. This means they work hard for an unknown outcome. Because, sometime, every hard work of the parents just get messed up, when some drastic changes interfere in their child’s life.
However, here, I have presented some points for your consideration to help your teen daughter or son to make them adapt their changes.
- Teach you teen kid to see changes as a kind of opportunities. This will help them to get adapted to the changes in short period.
- Remind your teen kid about their past, the past when they were in similar kind of situation.

- Make your teen kids to feel safe and secure when they are with you.

- Give ideas to your teen to make them to see the changes on different perspective.
