How can bromine water distinguish between benzylamine and aniline?

Answer: When we add bromine water to aniline it will form 2,4,6-tribromophenylamine in colourless precipitate where as benzylamine will not give this test.

  • Aniline react with nitrous acid gives stable diazonium salt at low temperature .

Benzylamine:

  • On addition of the bromine water to the benzylamine will not give any specific test or not give any kind of reaction.
  • Benzylamine reacts with nitrous acid to form diazonium salt which is unstable , which in turn give alcohol with the evolution of nitrogen gas.
