Using the below equation the heat capacity of a solid can be determined.

Explanation:

  • The heat capacity of a solid object can be measured by an experiment.
  • Put the solid object in water in a calorimeter.
  • Stir the mixture and measure the maximum temperature with a thermometer.
  • Measure the heat exchange between solid, water, and calorimeter.
  • According to the heat exchange principle, it will be equal to
  • Heat lost by the solid = heat gained by the water in the calorimeter + heat gained by the calorimeter.
  • Heat lost by the solid =mass of soli x specific heat capacity of soli x decrease in temperature
  • Heat gained by water (Q1) = mass of water x specific heat capacity of water x increase in its temperature
  • heat gained by calorimeter (Q2) =  mass of calorimeter x specific heat capacity x increase in its temperature
  • Heat lost by object = heat gained by calorimeter + heat gained by water
  • Heat lost by object = Q1 + Q2
  • By using this equation the heat capacity of a solid can be determined.
