A caste is a heredity class-based division based on various religious beliefs.

In Indian politics, caste has a very significant presence. This presence has taken up various forms.

  • The most prominent form is when leaders of a political party make promises directly in the name of a particular caste. This is done with the hope of drawing the members of that caste towards them and gathering majority support from them.
  • When it comes to nominations, political parties take great care of the electorate composition of a constituency. They try to nominate apt representatives from all castes to draw support from all of them. Similarly, when a party wins an election and the government is formed, great care is taken to include members of all castes and tribes to garner support from the public as a whole.
  • Some political parties often nominate more representatives of a particular caste, whom they think to be in majority. They do so in hopes of gaining favor from that particular caste.
  • No party can win the election by appealing to one single caste only. This is because, in our country, no caste has a clear majority in any constituency. Therefore all parties, big or small need to have the support of more than a single caste.
  • Even then, some parties are still known to be in favor of a particular caste and are seen as their representatives in the media.
  • There are some castes that are considered to be the "vote bank" of a particular political party. This means that a majority of caste members support that political party. No party can gain the unanimous support of any caste. A difference in opinion will always be there.
  • Caste politics is not absolute. If all members of a caste always voted for one single party or person, there would have been a continuous cycle of the same MPs and MLAs. This shows people do not freeze upon one single choice of a political leader because of caste preferences as leaders do lose elections.
