Computer software can be classified as “System software” and “Application software”.

System software refers to the programs required for the computer to operate and it provides a platform for application software. Without system software, computer hardware will not be able to perform its functions appropriately. Operating system is an example of a system software.

"Application software", on the other hand, is the software whose intent is to help user perform a specific task.  Examples of "application software" are web browser which helps user access internet, Adobe Photoshop – used for editing and creating images and photos.
