1.

Launch Microsoft Word. Click the “Insert” tab at the top of the screen. Click the “Text Box” button on the ribbon. Choose the “Draw Text Box” option at the bottom of the drop-down menu. When the cursor changes to a plus sign, draw a text box on the Word document. Don’t worry about the size of the advertisement text box at this time.

2.

Click the border of the text box to bring up the orange “Text Box Tools” tab at the top of the workspace. On the right side of the ribbon below the tab, enter the exact dimensions for the advertisement, such as “4” in the “Height” box and “3” in the “Width” box.

3.

Click the “Shape Fill” menu on the middle of the ribbon. Click “Picture.” Browse to an image to use for the background of the advertisement. Double-click the file name and the picture fills the text box. Note that Word will auto-fit the picture to the advertisement size, so if the image does not have the same proportions, it will look stretched or squished. Using a background image for the advertisement is optional. This is also a way to use your company logo as a watermark or background for the advertisement.

How to Create a Magazine Advertisement on Word

by Filonia LeChat

Microsoft Word isn’t considered the company’s desktop publishing software – Publisher gets that designation – but you don’t have to purchase Publisher, which isn’t included in the general Office 2010 Suite, to create dynamic publications. For your company’s next magazine advertisement, take a trip through Word’s menus, buttons and features to put together an eye-catching design that has page flippers stopping for pause. With Word, you can go much further than just word processing, designing a print ad that has all the news that’s fit to print and more.

4.

Fade the image, if you used one for the advertisement, back so it won’t overshadow your text, by clicking the new pink “Picture Tools” tab that appears at the top of the screen. Click the “Brightness” button on the left side of the ribbon. Choose the top “+40%” option.

5.

Click the cursor inside the advertisement text box. Type the advertisement headline, such as “Cat Supplies for Sale” or “Davida’s Restaurant Now Serving Cassoulet.”

6.

Highlight the headline text. Click the “Home” tab. Increase the text or change the font and color using the options in the “Font” portion of the ribbon.

7.

Press the “Enter” key and type the main advertisement text, which may be a call to action, product description, information about an upcoming event or hiring recruitment. Add your company’s information, such as a social media networking site, phone number, email address and website. Format the text as desired.

8.

Click the “Shape Outline” menu on the ribbon. This is the border of the advertisement. To change the default black Word border, click another small colored square in the menu. For no border, click “No Outline.”

9.

Click the “File” tab. Click “Save As.” Enter a name for the magazine advertisement and click the “Save” button.
