See desilting means removal of sediments or silt from rivers or lake. By removing the silts we increase the volume of river therefore allowing more water to flow through it, thus helping in the times of flood when a large amount of water needs to be drained.

Before knowing how desilting helps in flood controlling flood lets know what is desilting.
What is desilting?
Desilting means removing silts from the river sides.
Now the question arises that,
What is silt?
So silt is the sand like riverine deposit which is carried away by rivers and deposited here and there.
How can the desilting help in controlling floods?
By desilting we can remove the unnecessary silt from the river and banks and can increase the volume of water and the river then can control more water with higher volume.
