by using hybrid seed that result in a more desirable crop with special qualities like pest-resistant, fungus-resistant, last longer, have more nutritional value, give a higher yield, etc....this can be done by genetic modification of the seeds. a lot of development has been happening in this field of science in the past 10 years and are sometimes also supported by governments, NGOs and other private institutions.

also, farmers can get their soil tested for nutrients present/absent and get subsidised fertilizers from the government. this will also help in increasing yield and improve the quality as well as increase the variety of the crops that can potentially be grown in that piece of land.
