Division of states on the basis of language has gained momentum during freedom struggle itself. The freedom fighters felt that the British system of division of the country was not appropriate. The idea of division of India on the basis of languages was considered as a better strategy. States were reorganized through states reorganization act 1956 on the linguistic lines.

Creating linguistic states helped each state to officially patronize its language. People, were assured that their culture & language were secure, had no problem in learning other languages or appreciating other cultures out of their own free-will. By accepting diversity instead of seeking to level it, India had indirectly strengthened the federal fabric of the nation and forestalled escalation of region-centric grievances into violent forms. It helped in strengthening unity within the nation.

But it has promoted local identity. It has created distinctiveness among people. The regional differences have come in the way of national integration. Extreme sense of regionalism has resulted in parochialism and ethno centricism. People are much concerned about the regional gains, than the interest of the nation. Thus interstate boundary dispute, river dispute, insider vs outsider fights have become common.

Regionalism in contemporary India is readily used for political gains by petty politicians and secessionist organizations. Economic reasons are exploited for political dividends.

Regionalism in India is only a short cut to meet the political ambitions by emotionally exploiting the sentiments of the people. The fear of Balkanization is void of any logic. India is bound by a common culture that has flourished on this land many thousand years ago.

To contain the threats of regionalism we need to take measures on doing away with regional imbalance, check on regional political parties’ top priority to the economic development of deprived zones, restructuring of the society, acculturation, developed means of transport and communication proper education, appeal through mass media.
