Every time one's DNA is copied, there is a possibility of a small error being made in the process — whose effect (on the sequence of base pairs) can cause havoc changes. These alterations, or mutations, can accumulate over a lifetime; and the DNA can mutate and get damaged during the course of our lives, while we all inherit & pass on defective genes.
