Answer:

Education has played a prominent role in the awakening and fostering of nationalism, which led to the autonomy and independence of many former colonized countries around the world. This is also true with nation-building in post-conflict and post-colonial countries where education has played the crucial role as the unifying factor, the strengthening of social cohesion and the shaping of national identity in the formation of the new “imagined communities”. To what extent has education contributed to the above in post –independence Timor-Leste will be the focus of my proposed research. This will be achieved through an examination of the following policies and programs: the introduction and implementation of Portuguese and Tetun as the languages of instruction in schools, the reform of school curriculum, the piloting of the Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education program, and the adult literacy program.
