The reactant methyl chloride is made to reacts with formaldehyde in its vapor phase. This reaction leads to the production of acetone and hydrogen chloride. During this process, acetaldehyde is formed as intermediate product. Thus methyl chloride is converted to acetone by treating it with formaldehyde.
