how can history be written based on oral sources

The best example is the Rigveda. It was a shruti shastra and its shlokas were orally conveyed from generation to generation. Although the Rigveda was composed between 1500–1000 B.C, they were compiled only after 1000 A.D. Most of our knowledge about ancient India is derived from the Rigveda which itself is no better than an oral source.
