How can horses run very fast?

Horse are very efficient. Thoroughbreds (and basically every other type of horse) don't have any muscles in the bottom half of their legs, just tendons and ligaments to help them move. This makes them very efficient at running longer distances at a steady quick speed (around 30 miles an hour).
