There are two ways to distinguish between calcium chloride and zinc chloride.
Explanation:
- firstly we have to add traces of sodium hydroxide solution in both of the compound. Calcium chloride forms a curdy white PPT where is zinc chloride forms a gelatinous white precipitate.
- Then we have to excess the amount of sodium hydroxide which is added in the solution. We see that calcium chloride does not dissolve in excess of sodium hydroxide solution but zinc chloride dissolved in excess of sodium hydroxide
- the second process is by using flame test in which calcium forms a brick red flame
