I feel really sad about it too... So I volunteer one day a week a my local RSPCA shelter.
Shelters and rescues rely on volunteers, and while you encounter some sad stories, it makes you feel great to help, and it's encouraging to see how many people give their time and make an effort to make a difference. Volunteers are needed in all areas like walking dogs, cleaning pens, preparing food, but also things like working in the call center, laundry, transport, etc. Some volunteer jobs can even be done from home, such as trying to unite lost dogs with their owners by checking websites and calling around.
Of course not everyone has the time to volunteer. Some other ways to help are:
Donate, either money or supplies. Most shelters have a wish list of things they need, but it can even be stuff like old towels and blankets that many of us have lying around. Setting up a monthly donation is a great way to do it because that way you don't forget and the shelter can plan with the money ahead of time.
