It is because when the source of light moves far away from the object it forms to parts of shadow called Umbra and Penumbra.The Umbra is the part of the shadow which is in the centre of the shadow. It is more darker compared to the Penumbra. The Penumbra is formed due to the far placement of the source of light. The Penumbra is less darker in colour. If the source of light placed closer, then the Penumbra will fade away.
