Advantage of lichens and mosses to the environment is explained below

Primary succession refers to the growth of organisms at the place where no life existed before.

Lichens are a combination of bacteria and fungi in a mutual relationship. Mosses are non-vascular plants.

Lichens help the environment by breaking down the rocks on which they grow and survive. They also help by stopping erosion, thus helping in moisturising and providing nutrients.

The breaking down helps the further formation of soil. Death of lichens provides organic matter to the soil thus increasing its fertility for the growth of mosses and other plants.

Mosses too help the soil by helping in water retention and providing minerals and nutrients to the soil. They also clean up the environment from harmful gases.
