Plant and animal wastes decompose, adding nitrogen to the soil. Bacteria in the soil convert those forms of nitrogen into forms plants can use. Plants use the nitrogen in the soil to grow. People and animals eat the plants; then animal and plant residues return nitrogen to the soil again, completing the cycle.

Nitrogen in the soil can be replenished by sowing leguminous  crops such as pea, chick peas... etc, these crop's roots contains special nitrogen fixing bacteria that fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. The nitrogen fixing bacteria lives in a symbiotic relationship with the crops, the plants give them food and shelter and the bacteria gives nitrogen and other minerals to the plant.
