How can one determine the approximate age of a tree?

by counting the tree's rings
or
multiplying tree's diameter n the growth factor to estimate the age

when you cut the branch or the bark of a tree you find some ring like structures which are the tissues of the tree which changes every year so by counting them we can determine it's age
