The answer of your question is from Raymond B. Fosdick in the lesson 'A Dilemma'. In this he says that science should be used only for the constructive purpose and not to be aimed at the degeneration of the society.

Our search for truth bring our civilization to the brink of destruction because, Science is the Search for truth. The misuse of science and technology can destroy everything so according to the writer research shall be subjected to some kind of restraint if it is not linked to human constructive purpose. So that excess of destructive research and destruction of Humanity can be controlled.

There are certain inventions that can evoke both positive and negative responses. Invention of Radio, Automobiles, and jet propulsion shall be aimed towards the betterment of the society rather than creating ugliness and desolation. That's why the science should be used only for the constructive purpose and not to be aimed at the degeneration of the society. So that our search for truth will not bring our civilization to the brink of destruction.

Hope this answer will help you
