Short circuit or overload is caused due to high consumption of electricity or by touching to both terminals together.
To avoid the damage caused you should use earthing wire this is a black color wire which automatically disconnect the electricity and prevent you causing further damage.

When the over flow of current is passed through the wire can short circuit.
To avoid the damage we use fuse or MCB(Miniature CIRCUITS Breaks) because it have a thin wire that melt when the too much current is passed through it.
