How can plants like cactus and acacia live in desert with scarce water
Answers
Desert regions are well known for their hot and dry weather and environment without any sort of water.
That's why the plant growth in the deserts are almost next to the impossible.
But still plants like the cactus and acacia, born in the desert regions.
They have long roots which collect water from the underground, and they have transformed their leaves into thorns,to prevent the water evaporation.
In this way they grow and survive in the desert regions.
Every plant needs water for survival.
However this does not mean that we will not have plants in the desert.
The plants in the deserts have structural adaptations that enable them to survive the scarce water conditions in the desert.
The adaptations of these desert plants are as follows:
1) They have roots close to the soil surface which helps in taking the water very fast during rainfall and the water is stored in the stem.
2) When water is no longer available the desert shrubs shed off their leaves and become dormant to minimize transpiration hence minimize lose of water.
3) Plants like cactus have leaves in form of spines to minimize transpiration.
4) The thick fleshy stem of the cactus helps in making food and loses less water due to the sunken pores on the stem.
