Peter Van Dan, according to Ann, is a lazy and boring boy. He spent most of his time sleeping. Besides. He imagines that he has all sorts of diseases and escapes from doing any substantial work. He is very irresponsible and does not care much about his parent's instructions. When he was forbidden to read a book about women he takes it and reads it on the sly. Even after his father takes the book away and asks him to leave it he again dares to read it secretly. When he was found out he did not even bother to apologize. On the whole Peter Van Dan is a carefree young boy

Peter van Daan was a shy, awkward and quiet boy of sixteen. He was thoughtful, sensitive, sensible and observant, different from his loud and brash parents. Reticent and reclusive, he was unlike other boys and Anne initially misjudged him to be a hypochondriac, hypersensitive and lazy.
