Testing for unsaturation. Bromine water is a dilute solution of bromine, normally orange-brown in colour. It becomes colourless when shaken with anĀ alkene, but its colour remains the same when it is shaken with alkanes.

You can use Baeyer's reagent. That is alkaline solution of KmnO4.

Adityaaryan681681: Unsaturated compound dissolve in CCl4 and added to Br2 dissolved in ccl4 . The orange color of br2 get colorless.
nymphias15: Search on the web kid. You don't know much about chem. Don't ever be under the impression that only one test is there for testing something. There are many tests for testing something.
