John Locke was an English philosopher and physician, generally regarded as one of the most prominent minders of Enlightenment, and often known as the "father of liberalism." He thought reasoning (to think logically), could decide what rights people had in a "state of nature". He agreed that life, liberty (freedom), & property are natural rights, both of which every person should have being human beings
Explanation:
- Locke felt no one's "life, liberty or property" would be protected in a "state of nature" when there is no govt, or no law, or no regulation to protect it. Therefore, people have decided to form governments. Locke claims that when people build it, governments do not exist..However, he states that govts. do no exist till people "create them".
- Locke felt that, in a state of nature, nobody would be entitled to rule over you, and that people will not have any right to govern "anyone else" either. Locke says that when people give their consent (permission/approval), then only can people rule over someone else. If the people do not agree to a law, it is not valid or legal. This means that a legitimate government's authority comes from the people 's permission (permit).
- Even though everyone accepts that they have natural rights (life, liberty and property), they are worried with preserving those rights. People should feel free to do something in a state of nature that they want to do. However, they would not have their rights secured and would feel unsafe if there is no govt
- The main challenge for John Locke was to find ways to secure everybody's natural rights to enjoy them & live in harmony. He hoped that every individual would agree with others & establish a govt which would allow it to make & implement laws the best way to resolve this problem. Locke named this social contract" for this form of agreement.
- With all contracts, to get something (compromise) you have to give up. In a social contract, everybody agrees to surrender the right to do "whatever they want", in return for the protection offered by a govt. All agrees to follow the limits imposed by the govt's laws on them. Everyone is guaranteed that their rights to "life, liberty and property" are secured. According to Locke, the government's main aim is to protect the natural laws which the individual cannot effectually safeguard in a natural state.
