The circulatory system helps in heat conservation by vasoconstriction and vasodilation of blood vessels.

  • Thermoregulation is the regulation of heat transfer from the body. When the body is hot, sweat is released from the skin, and when it is cold, less sweat is released from the skin so less heat energy is lost. This is because of the thermoregulation function of blood vessels.
  • Vasoconstriction means that the blood vessels of the skin constrict and reduce the blood flow to the skin, which reduces the aggregate of heat loss from the blood vessels of the skin. This conserves heat.
  • Vasodilation happens when the blood vessels of the skin dilate, and the blood flow to the surface is increased. An increased flow of blood  to the skin increases the amount of heat loss from the blood vessels to the environment, increasing heat loss. It can also increase oxygen delivery.
