Democracy, as a practice, has been prevalent in India for nearly seven decades now. In the past few decades, some citizens, led by their political masters, have become so intoxicated with power that they have started taking things for granted and, consequently, been occupied with tearing apart the fabric of our democratic institutions.
To strengthen our democracy we must first respect our courts and the election commission. In sum, we must be law-abiding citizens and follow the rule of law. Our elections should be truly free and fair; people indulging in malpractices must be debarred from seeking the people's mandate. In Parliament, political parties should adopt a participative attitude, not a confrontationist one. We must listen to the people more and talk less; only speak if we have a valuable point to make. Political parties should root out corruption, nepotism and the dominance of the strong over the weak.
Our police force should be trained to be neutral and serve all citizens in an identical manner. Today, the policemen often turn a blind eye if the accused have the backing of certain people in society. The police must be more akin to the army in its functioning.
India is a melting pot of various cultures, many religions, numerous languages or dialects and so on. This unity in diversity must be maintained and everyone should be respected and protected.
Every individual in this country should regain the values of life our forefathers were known for, because a truly good person is one who not only expects others to be good to him or her, when he or she does not abide by the basic principles of a good value system.
If we follow what has been written here, we can certainly hope for the betterment of our democracy.
