Religious harmony and secularism are of prime importance. People of different religious faiths coexist in pluralistic society; if any clash of ideas occurs, this may lead to serious disharmony which can hamper the progress of a society, and country.

India is a land where people belonging to different faiths and communities co-exist peacefully. Maintaining communal harmony is very essential. In the chapter My Childhood by APJ Abdul Kalam, we read how even the great scientist faced discrimination in his childhood; but at the same time he had some wonderful people around him who were against this discrimination. For example people like Lakshmana Sastry and Sivasubramania Iyer, Abdul Kalam’s science teacher love Abdul Kalam and supported him whenever there was any discrimination against him. Such people maintain communal harmony.

Students can also play a pivotal role in maintaining communal harmony by loving their class mates equally irrespective of their caste, color, creed, and religion.

Mr. Kalam was a Muslim. Ramanada Sastry, Aravindan and Sivaprakasan were his orthodox Hindu Brahmin friends.

Their friendships shows that the friends should be free from the boundaries of caste.

When Kalam and Sastry were not allowed to sit together by their new teacher due to the caste system, both the boys were sad.

Moreover, Sastry’s father rebuked the teacher and made her realize her mistake.
