How can there be thousands of kinds of matter when we are aware of the existence of more than 100 elements?

Answer:

matters are basically substance around us. these can be formed by any physical or chemical process. These are the combinations of 118 elements yet discovered. Just like whole numbers (0,1,2...,9) can form quite large digits, similarly these elements can for a large no. of substances.
