Saving Earth From Global Warming

Elon Musk has very wisely commented, “We’re running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere... can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe.”

Our wise elders have given us various maxims to live happily. One of them is ‘Excess of everything is bad.’ This maxim defines the present state of carbon dioxide in our environment quite aptly and relevantly. Excess of this gas in our atmosphere has wreaked havoc with the balance of our environment. Owing to man’s selfish greedy activities, this gas assumed such a dangerous proportion in the atmosphere that if no immediate action is taken, it will soon bring an unmanageable catastrophe.

Global warming has already started affecting the entire world. Climatic changes are noticeable everywhere. Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.

In northern Greenland traditional Inuit culture is already under threat. The sea ice that Inuit use to hunt seals, walruses, and other animals, is not staying as long as it used to. Global warming's impact on sea ice and ocean currents are also altering the distribution of animals. Melting of the huge ice sheet on Greenland will raise the sea-water level by a few feet, leading to submerging of habitable coastal areas and compelling the inhabitants to move farther inside the terrain. This would further have ecological ramifications.

The people of the world must unite and stop global warming from further rising. Green house gases’ emission must immediately be controlled along with the large scale afforestation in all the countries, especially the developing countries.

Each man or woman living on this planet must shoulder the responsibility of reducing our carbon-footprint. We must replace pollution causing fuels with clean and green energy resources.

If the environment is not given the top priority throughout the world, we will lose it forever; losing it means the annihilation of the entire humankind along with all other life-forms of flora and fauna! Do you want it to happen? If no; kindly start doing as much as you can for the preservation of the environment!

Answer:

Henry Bunner’s poem The Heart of the Tree is undoubtedly a wake-up call for the human race in the wake of the growing environmental pollution and global warming of late. The poem is very relevant in an age when rapid and reckless development and urbanisation are taking their toll on the Environment.

The ever-growing pollution of the environment is causing a lot of new ailments and disorders in the human body including nasal and lung problems. In places, rapid deforestation is threatening to bring consequences like desertification and weather change. That further brings complication to overall human lifestyle. Moreover, many species of birds, insects and animals are on the verge of extinction. That would have certain consequences on the ecological balance of the environment.  Global warming in the recent decades has probably been the most dreaded environmental change so far. It is threatening to raise the sea-water level and even some cities may finally go under water. All these may well lead to a premature doom of humankind.

It can therefore be truly said the poet sees this impending destruction of the world and the human race if some immediate steps are not taken to save Nature. And this poem is his voice for raising an appeal to plant more and more trees, as only trees can save the world from this probable calamity. Henry Bunner’s poem truly motivates people in plantation as it chooses to show the greatness of the man who plants a tree rather than just saying the usefulness of trees. Bunner hails that man by saying that the man not only plants a tree but also beautifies the surroundings, gives home to birds and animals, brings rains and cool shade, helps the future generations by planting their harvest and a forest’s heritage, shows his love and blessings for his neighbours as well as his civic sense, and most importantly helps in the nation’s growth. Thus, the poet goes on to highlight the theme of environmental awareness and appeals people to plant more trees in a brilliant way through his poem.
