Mortality rate is typically expressed in units of deaths per 1,000 individuals per year; thus, a mortality rate of 9.5 (out of 1,000) in a population of 1,000 would mean 9.5 deaths per year in that entire population, or 0.95% out of the total.

  1. Death rate is also known as mortality rate.
  2. Crude death rate is total number of deaths in a given population, in a given time period within a given geographical territory.
  3. Crude death rate = (total number of deaths in a given year/mid interval)*100000 population.
  4. Mid year is middle of one calendar year.
  5. The measurement of death rate varies as per the purpose of finding like there is maternal death rate for mothers, neonatal death rates for very young children etc.
