"Valency is the combining capacity of a element"
The electrons present in outermost shell of an atom are known electron(s) and gives valence or valency of the element or atom.
According to Lewis Law
Elements having 1, 2, and 3 valence electron(s) will show 1, 2, 3 valency while elements having 5, 6, 7 electron(s) will show the valency according to the following rule:
Valency = 8 - number of valence electrons.
