How can we determine if two ratios form a proportion? Like for example, how can we determine if 1/3 and 13/39 can form a proportion???

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

If they're in fraction form, set them equal to each other to test if they are proportional. Cross multiply and simplify. If you get a true statement, then the ratios are proportional!

Answer:

We can determine it by converting them into fractions and then cross multiplying or by multiplying the means and extremes together (in a:b::c:d, a and d are extremes while b and c are means).

Step-by-step explanation:

Method 1:
1:3= 1/3

13:39= 13/39

1*39/3*13 (multiplying 1/3 by reciprocal (multiplicative inverse) of 13/39)

= 39/39

= 1

Method 2:
1:3::13:39

1*39:3*13

= 39:39

= 1

If the answer is one, the ratios are in proportion.
