There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in humans. Out of them 22 pairs are called autosomes. And the remaining 1 pair is called the sex chromosomes.

Explanation:

Here is how.

Total there are 46 chromosomes right..?

We know that, half the no of chromosomes (23 chromosomes) comes from both parents.

More precisely, 23 chromosomes comes from Female and the other 23 from male.

During Spermatogenesis in Males, X as well as Y chromosomes are present in the sperms. In females there is only an egg with only X chromosome.

If the X chromosomes from males fertilises the egg the result would be:

(22+22)autosomes + (XX) sex chromosome

This will be a female child.

If the Y chromsomes from the females fertilises the egg, the result would be:

(22+22)autosomes + (XY) sex chromosome.

This would result in a male child.

In fact, from this you can say that it is the sex chromosomes that determine the sex of the child.

In each fertilisation, there is a 50% chance of getting a male/female child.

In short if the sex chromosome is XY, then it is male child.

If the sex chromosomes are XX, then it is female child.
