The passe compose in french is used to relate the events, while the imparfait is used to describe that what have been in the past, state of being in the past, or the past habits that had been upto. All of this is taken on a special importance or event in the narration of the precise actions, when both the tenses often occur in the same saga.

Hope this helps you!!

Generally, the passé composé is used to relate events while the imparfait is used to describe what was going on in the past, states of being in the past, or past habits. All this takes on special importance in narration of past actions, when both tenses often occur in the same story.
